How to cope with lockdown anxiety about leaving the house

During these strange times it’s sometimes hard to remember how life used to be before lockdown. Although that may sound silly three/four months in lockdown for some people is enough to feel like a life time and therefore makes one feel like reality was a long time ago, so getting back to those usual routines can be a difficult task, especially if there is the current circumstances.

The best way to think about it, is to believe that everyone right now is in the same situation. Everyone is feeling this un-nerving feeling because there is a consistency of what ifs? And everyone has been told the same rules by which they are advised to follow, so you are not alone in this sense of anxiety.

Be prepared

Another way which could help one overcome a sense of anxiety is to be prepared. When going out in public or on public transport carry around the new added essentials, like a face mask or hand sanitizer to make sure no germs are spread and you, yourself, are doing your part in keeping others around you safe as well.

It may help to have a set plan or route of your day to help one keep in control of the situation. It may add a sense of relaxation, as you know your set path and therefore won’t have to worry too much about what others are doing or the chances of running into anything unpredictable but also limits your contact with other people if this is something you are concerned with.

Partnered with the planned route, perhaps start with shorter journeys. An example could be a 15 minute walk around your local neighbourhood, increasing time and distance each day, following a constant pattern to then have a main goal of going on public transport, like a bus.

Keeping track of your progress is a great way to feel a sense of accomplishment and to push you further to attaining your goal. ALSO A REWARD IS MANDATORY! EVEN IF ITS CHOCOLATE!!

To avoid anxiety about leaving the house try and incorporate things you enjoy and slowly ease yourself back into these old routines and activities. Having something fun planned, gets you looking forward to leaving the house, for example seeing a friend for a coffee after months of lockdown and the ongoing planning on zoom calls. Easing back into the norm could even be as simple as having a friend over in the comfort of your own back garden, therefore you are leaving your house to an extent to see a friend.

Another great idea could be setting yourself challenges or goals if that is something you find joy in doing. If leaving the house makes you anxious your main goal could be going to a public place to complete a weekly shop, and so during that week each day you go out a little further each time until you feel confident enough to complete the main goal. Remember to keep each goal achievable and once the main goal has been hit to reward yourself. Also remember that no one will go back to the norm instantly, it will take some work and getting used to again, therefore leading to the next idea which is checking facts.

Social distancing

You may find some comfort in the stats that are provided by your local news report. They will keep you up to date with the busy shopping times, the number of cases as well as tips to help maintain social distancing, but also remember to have faith in your fellow citizens as everyone wants this virus gone as well as each business and local place putting 100% effort in to keep everyone safe, so the norm becomes almost attainable than maybe once perceived.

If you need a helping hand, phone a friend and get them to go shopping with you. Having a little extra support as well as chatting to a friend can help keep your mind at ease as well as distracting you from the world around you, allowing full focus to be on you and your conversation.
